To Rise from the Ashes

Deaton, shouting to his comrades, looses and arrow and steps aside to make room for Luc, who blasts the thing with his Wand of Web.

The arrow strikes it, sticks in its torso, and the thing doesn’t notice it at all. The webs cover it and slow it a little before it breaks the web free from the floor and lumbers forward, tearing and thrashing at the web stuck to it, ripping it. It’s slowed for now, but not for long.

Meta Recap

Deaton saw the thing and communicated its presence and description to the others. Luc was pretty sure he knew what it was when it turned and noticed Deaton, and started advancing on the group. Deaton fired, hitting it dead center to seemingly no effect, while Luc hit it with a Web from his wand, which slowed it some. Thaldayn has come alongside Deaton and has readied his sword. I assume that Amarack has his weapon out and is ready to fight, as well.

Note that the passage is only wide enough for one person to fight effectively. Squeezing in two of you will give both of you DIS on attacks if you decide to fight right here. The thing is about 50 feet away and lumbering forward. You’re at a 90 degree curve in the tunnel, looking around a corner to your right (clockwise turn in the tunnel from your perspective). You’ve got about 30 feet of tunnel behind you, and then another 90 degree curve – the whole tunnel is shaped like an angular ‘S’ from above. If you were to move back the 30 feet to the previous curve you’d have about another 20 feet of tunnel before you’d be back out in the room with the faces carved on the walls.

I think we can work out at least some more of the encounter here. Just tell me what you’re going to do and give me the relevant stats and I’ll take care of it. For the sake of online initiative, it’s going last. Given what’s already transpired, your INIT order is Deaton, Luc, Thaldayn, and Amarack.

If the corridor is cramped for us, then I think the golem would be hard pressed to move.
Luc yells “Thal, to the front! Shield up, full defense. Draw it into the tunnel. Deaton, you behind Thal, then Amarack, and myself as we have more range.” Luc then unleashes another blast of Web before switching to the wand of Magic Missiles then fires on it with Magic Missiles.

The tunnel is 5-6 feet wide, enabling one medium-sized creature to face off against another in it.

It’ll be upon you by the time you rearrange your order and cast that missile, but what you’re describing will work fine.

“We need more room!” Deaton shouts as he prepares another arrow to fire. “I can’t get at him!”

Deaton will begin calling his shots (sharpshooter feat: -5 to hit but +10 to damage)

Thaldayn prepares to receive the attack while Deaton stands as tall as he can in order to loose another arrow. Behind him Amarack prepares to do something useful, while Luc, bringing up the rear, tries to fire off some bolts of force over the heads of his comrades.

The three bolts strike it in the torso, sizzling for an instant before disappearing, leaving a small singed dent where they impacted.

Luc continues blasting with the Wand of MM until one charge left, then holsters it and pulls the Wand of Web to again try to hold it in place. 1-2 more charge with Wand of web.

Comin't'gitcha

Does Luc know how many charge it had?

Comin't'gitcha

Wand charges, from previous conversations seems to be 6. However, if the last charge expended, the wand has percentage chance of failing or not recharging for use the next day. The wand of MM had six, unless I misunderstood. Help me out if I missed something.

Comin't'gitcha

Okay, it started with 6. And the Wand of Web also had 6. You’ve expended 2 missile blasts and one web – keep track of those, please.

Comin't'gitcha

Luc is able to get off 2 blasts of MM and one of Web before the thing rams into Thaldayn. Deaton can get off another 2 arrows if he’d like, although they seem to do nothing but stick in the thing.

Deaton stows his bow and bolts through the scuffle to check out the room past. Ac: 17. Acrobatics +4 (not proficient). I think as I move through he’ll get disadvantage to hit me due to thal’s thingamajig?

5e doesn’t have the same Acrobatics rules as previous editions, but what I’ve got below makes sense, I believe, based on rules related to movement.

1. You can’t move through an enemy’s space unless it’s two sizes larger or two sizes smaller than you. The tunnel is not quite wide enough for two medium-sized creatures standing abreast, but it’s wider than 5 feet. Therefore…
2. Squeezing through a narrow space makes for difficult terrain (doubling movement cost) and puts you at DIS for Dex checks. Additionally, attacks against you while there have ADV. So…

Deaton can attempt to squeeze/bolt past the thing to get behind it, but it’ll result in a Opportunity Attack against him at ADV by the creature. Thaldayn’s AC bonus will have no effect because Deaton is moving out in front of him, putting himself between it and Thaldayn – his shield skill would not offer Deaton any benefit due to the linear nature of the encounter.

So…does Deaton go for it or not?

Comin't'gitcha

Deaton decides he’ll wait to see how hard it hits Thaldayn since it’s a nearly guaranteed thunking.

In the interest of making sure that everyone is up to speed on events, we will pick up at this moment in the encounter tomorrow night. Thaldayn is up front, followed by Deaton, then Amarack, then Luc. Thaldayn has his shield and sword out and is ready to receive the charge; Deaton will have time to stow his bow, or drop it and draw his sword; Amarack will have enough time for two actions; and Luc has already spent his actions, in using and exchanging the wands, as the thing closed on you. Luc will begin tomorrow night with the Wand of Web in one hand, and the MM wand in the other (why not?).
